Stop Organising Your Clutter: The Truth About Storage Containers

Writer: Henda CoetzerHenda Coetzer

We’ve all been there, scrolling through Pinterest, admiring those beautifully labelled baskets and perfectly arranged pantries, convinced that the key to an organised home is just one more set of storage containers away.

But let’s get real for a moment: clutter stays clutter, no matter how pretty the basket is.

Organised Clutter is Still Clutter

Before you even think about buying another bin, box, or drawer divider, ask yourself: Am I organising things I actually need and use, or am I just storing clutter in a more aesthetic way?

Too often, we fall into the trap of trying to make clutter look neat instead of dealing with the real issue...owning too much stuff that doesn’t serve us. Organising should come after decluttering, not before. Otherwise, you’re just rearranging things you don’t need, filling your home with more containers than actual space.

Choose Your Approach

Decluttering can feel overwhelming if you don’t have a system in place. The best approach is to break it down into manageable steps and focus on one area or one category at a time...not your entire house at once.

  • By area (room-by-room): This works well if you’re tackling a specific space, like your kitchen or wardrobe, and need to make it more functional.

  • By category (similar items at once): This is a great method for when items are scattered throughout the house, like clothes, books, paperwork, or sentimental keepsakes.

Declutter with Purpose

If you don’t use it, don’t love it, and wouldn’t buy it again—it needs to go.

The ‘What If’ Clutter is Stealing Your Space

We all have those “just in case” or “what if” items. The jeans that might fit again, the kitchen gadget we might use one day, the piles of random cords from devices we no longer own. But here’s the truth: holding on to everything for a hypothetical future is robbing you of the space to enjoy your present.

Your home should work for you now, not for every possible scenario that might happen. And when you finally let go of the excess, you’ll discover that you don’t actually need nearly as many storage containers as you thought.

Organise What’s Left, with Purpose

Once you’ve decluttered, then it’s time to organise. And guess what? You’ll need far fewer baskets and bins because everything that remains will have a place and a purpose.

When organising, consider:

  • Zones within your home – Keep items close to where they’re actually used.

  • Functionality – Store things in a way that makes them easy to access and put back.

  • Quality over quantity – Invest in a few great storage solutions, rather than stuffing every drawer with unnecessary dividers.

The beauty of this process is that when you own less, life becomes easier. You’ll spend less time searching for things, cleaning around clutter, and trying to make space where there isn’t any. Instead of constantly organising and reorganising, you’ll have a home that naturally stays tidy because everything in it has earned its place.

So before you head to the store for more baskets, take a step back and ask yourself: Do I really need to organise this, or should I just let it go?

And if you're stuck, I can help you. Reach out to me, I look forward to helping you!
